Tips for a Safe and Fun Photoshoot

It is important to prioritize your safety especially when the models and photographer are of the opposite sex. Ensuring a safe and comfortable environment will allow you to feel comfortable and be at your best. Here are some tips to help you have a safe and fun photoshoot experience

  1. Your instincts are correct

Trust your instincts, they’re usually correct. If something feels off, it is. It is ok to express something that concerns you or doesn't feel comfortable. A professional photographer will respect you and address your concerns to help you be your best.

  2. Research the photographer

Before you work with a photographer look at their portfolio and checkout reviews from other people who have worked with them. A good photographer should have positive reviews from prior colboartions and a solid portfolio.

  3. Bring somebody with you that you trust

It is ok to bring somebody with you on the photoshoot. This can be a friend or a parent. Not only can this person help you feel safe but its another person to cheer you on and help you feel confident….. and xtra eyes to notice stray hairs doesn’t hurt. While it’s not necessary, I personally prefer if the model lets me know ahead of time, as I try to bring enough water and snacks for everyone, especially on longer shoots.

  4. Communicate your boundaries and expectations

The theme, along with any outfits and a general idea of the type of posing for the photoshoot, should be discussed prior to the photoshoot. During this planning phase, it’s important to express any poses or wardrobe concerns you have. Along with any boundaries you have such as nudity or implied nudity. Do not be pressured into doing something you aren’t comfortable with. Also, express your expectations of the environment for the photoshoot. A professional will respect your openness and your boundaries.

  5. Safety Call

Let a friend or family member know where you’re going to be and plan to call them by a certain time, not a text message, that could come from anyone. Having a person with you is 1 layer of security but it has its limitations. Adding an extra layer will help ensure that you feel safe and comfortable. Note: when setting a time to check in leave enough time for the photoshoot to run over. If everyone is having fun and creating great images, it can be easy to go past the the estimated end time.

  6. You deserve to work with a PROFESSIONAL

A professional photographer will pride themselves on their professionalism as much, or more, than their photography skills. You are a professional and you deserve to work with other professionals. If the photographer is not behaving or communicating professionally, trust your instinct.

  7. Speak up for yourself

It can be intimidating to speak up for yourself, especially for newer models who feel like they don’t want to mess up this opportunity to get good photos. No photoshoot is worth your safety or having to work in an uncomfortable environment. Speak up for yourself. A professional will respect you and make adjustments to ensure your comfort.

An uncomfortable model will translate to the images. Creating amazing images and looking your best is directly related to how comfortable you are, and thus if you’re enjoying the experience. A professional photographer will want you to be at your best in order to work together to create great pictures.
